How Do You Know if Someone is Drowning

With it being the season to hit the pool or spend the weekend at the lake, drowning occurrences are at their peak. There are many precautionary steps that can be taken to prevent drowning accidents, but sometimes it’s not enough.

In a drowning scenario, one must first recognize the problem before they can help, but most people look for the Hollywood version of what a drowning looks like. In reality, if someone is drowning, they aren’t likely to splash fiercely and call for help. In fact, most drownings are quiet and go unnoticed.

In the event that someone is drowning, you need to know what to look for. Here are a few examples of what to look for:

  • The victim may be bobbing up and down in the water, while gasping or hyperventilating. They will likely inhale quickly before submerging again.
  • The victim probably won’t be able to wave or yell for help, instead their arms will be lateral to the water, extended in a fashion that looks like they are trying to push their body up.
  • No noise will come from the drowning person. Since the body is more concentrated on breathing than speaking, the drowning person cannot yell for help.
  • The person won’t make any attempt to move hair if it’s covering their face. The eyes will be closed or out of focus.

In any case that looks suspicious; simply ask the person “Are you okay?” If they do not respond, react quickly. Most drowning scenarios only have a 30 second window to help the victim.

Always watch young children extra carefully and provide needed safety equipment, such as life vests at the lake. If a child is missing, always check the water first.
