Wichita police take underage drinking very seriously. The four people arrested recently can attest to that. Two adults were arrested for violating hosting laws and two minors were arrested for underage drinking. Underage drinking rises dramatically over the holidays since the children are not in school and there are numerous holiday parties.
To help keep your kids safe and prevent alcohol and drug-related tragedies, a few holiday party tips for parents include:
Talk to your kids before the party and clearly prohibit any drinking and using illegal substances.
Be a model for your kids. Always make sure your guests do not drink and drive.
When hosting a party with alcoholic beverages, make sure you have a sufficient amount of non-alcoholic drinks, foods, and games to all.
Dispose of all leftover and unfinished drinks.
If your children are attending a holiday party at someone else’s house, phone ahead to make sure there will no be alcoholic beverages available.
Tell your kids that if they are at a party and they feel uncomfortable or do violate the rules they can call you to come pick them up no questions asked and no consequences. It may trouble you to let your child slide if they do drink but its better to let it slide then attend a funeral because your child was afraid to call to get a ride home from a bad situation for fear of punishment.
Stay responsible this holiday season and help Wichita roads stay safe. Talk to your kids about the consequences of drinking and always be a good model of behavior.
