High school sports are all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Riddell Inc., a helmet manufacturer, has been in the news over the last year for traumatic brain injury lawsuits. Now, a Colorado jury has awarded $11.5 million in the 2008 case of a teenager who suffered severe brain injuries.
Riddell denies its helmets have design defects and intends to appeal the verdict. Although the jury found Riddell was not 100 percent at fault for Rhett Ridolfi’s injuries, the company was found to be negligent in failing to warn people about concussion risks.
Ridolfi suffered a concussion during practice and wasn’t immediately taken to the hospital. This resulted in severe brain damage and paralysis on his left side. Ridolfi’s family sued Riddell, as well as the high school football coaches.
Riddell has been sued in the past for being negligent in informing players of the connection between repeated traumatic head impacts and long-term brain injuries. According to the complaints, these injuries could even lead to Alzheimer’s, dementia and chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
