Kansas man in jail after high speed wreck

Posted on October 28th, 2012

Usually, we only see high speed chases in the movies. However, south-central Nebraska saw a high speed chase that ended in a fatal collision involving a 22-year-old Kansas man.

Destry Swartz, of Coats, Kan., was behind the wheel during the high speed chase and is now being charged with vehicular homicide, suspicion of second-offense driving under the influence, operation of a motor vehicle to avoid arrest and willful, reckless driving. Neither Swartz nor the 17-year-old Lexington boy with him were injured.

The chase, which began at11:57 p.m., only lasted for six minutes. It began when a state trooper tried to pull over a 2004 Dodge Ram that violated a stop sign and was driving recklessly in Lexington. Swartz fled the trooper and reached high speeds while fleeing south on U.S. Highway 283.

At the intersection of Highway 283 and Cattlemen Drive, Swartz ran a red light and slammed into 1995 Ford F150 pickup. The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver’s identity has not been released.

So if you’ve ever had thoughts to trying to outrun the red and blue lights in your rearview mirror, think twice about the damage you could cause yourself and others.
