Is This Judge’s Ruling Fair?

An Ohio judge is creating quite a stir with his sentences. Judge Michael J. Holbrook has dubbed his sentencing technique “Holbrook Holiday.” Holbrook Holiday consists of asking the convicted defendant what their favorite holiday is, then sentencing them to spend that holiday in prison.

Betina Young, 44, convicted of issuing state ID cards and driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, is the most recent defendant to receive the Holbrook Holiday ruling. After learning that Christmas is Young’s favorite holiday, Judge Holbrook sentenced her to spend the next five Christmas’s in prison.

Judge Holbrook has been using the Holbrook Holiday sentencing for nine years. Holbrook also stated that using this method serves to remind defendants what could happen if they violate their probation and have to spend many more holidays in prison. Approximately 40 people have received the Holbrook Holiday sentence.
