In hopes of decreasing distracted driving, California made the decision to allow hands-free texting in 2012. However, a study by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the University of Utah is now showing that hands-free texting can actually be more dangerous than making a hand-held call.
This growing trend in vehicles may be designed with good intentions, but instead only contributing to an already dangerous problem. After the study, the AAA concluded that hands-free technology contributed to a driver’s “suppressed brain activity, slowed reaction times, missed visual cues and reduced visual scanning of the driving environment.”
Although each state has strictly regulated laws regarding texting while driving, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not yet stepped in to impose regulations on hands-free technology.
