Medical Payment Insurance, also called Med Pay, is a form of insurance that covers your immediate medical costs after an accident. Similar, but less extensive than Personal Injury Protection (also known as PIP), Med Pay can cover ambulance and emergency room costs for the driver and all of the passengers involved. Just like Personal Injury Protection payments MedPay insurance payments are available for medical expenses no matter who is at fault in the wreck. They are even available if no one is at fault.
The minimum coverage for Med Pay is $5000, but policy holders can add up to $25,000 of coverage to their policy. Another aspect of Med Pay is that it is purchased on a “by vehicle” basis. This means that if you have multiple cars, you have to purchase Med Pay for each vehicle if you wish to be covered while in each car.
Some policies with Med Pay will even cover you if you are walking or bicycling and are hit by a car. Med Pay will cover anyone listed on your policy to drive your vehicle as well.
An important reminder for anyone considering purchasing Med Pay is to remember is it not a substitute for health insurance. Before purchasing Med Pay, you should review your healthcare coverage to avoid duplicate coverage. This will also show you where your healthcare coverage may be lacking. Depending on your insurance company, Med Pay can be affordable at as little as $20 a year. Med Pay is important for all drivers to consider, especially if you drive multiple passengers on a regular basis.
Kansas law does not require insurance companies to include Medpay as part of an automobile insurance policy. Kansas law does require that insurance companies include PIP as part of any insurance policy. To learn more about PIP go to our article about PIP insurance.
