If you’re going on vacation, a few quick actions could save your home

With families planning trips for the upcoming fall or Thanksgiving breaks, it’s important to give thoughtful consideration about not only packing in preparation for the trip, but preparing your home for your absence.

Before you leave for the weekend or any extended amount of time, prepare your home for the following:

  1. Unplug appliances: Space heaters, coffee makers, toasters and hairdryers should always be unplugged before leaving. These appliances have been known to short out and cause house fires. Large appliances can be unplugged as well, such as your TV.

  2. Don’t start chores before you leave: Not finishing household chores before you leave can leave you with extensive damage. Starting the dishwasher or a load of laundry seems innocent, but a leak while you’re away can result in serious damage to your house.

  3. Adjust your thermostat: To conserve energy and avoid freezing pipes, set your thermostat at 55 degrees. This keeps pipes from freezing and bursting.

  4. Stop mail delivery: Let the postman know to hold your mail until you are back from vacation. Newspapers and mail that pile up outside your house leave a green light for someone to break into your home.

  5. Have a neighbor watch after your home: Have a friend or neighbor visit occasionally if you will be away for a lengthy amount of time. Having someone check for water damage or other issues can save you a lot of money and stress.

So before hitting the highway, be smart – protect your home even before you leave.
