Swimming Pool Electrocution More Common than Most Think

When 11-year-old Lauren Cecil’s parents dropped her off for swim practice, it seemed like another day. However, this seemingly normal day took a drastic turn when a power line snapped and fell. Although two other girls were in the pool at the time, Lauren was the only swimmer electrocuted.

A connector holding the power lines together is suspected to be the cause for the fallen power line. If the connector of the power lines is found responsible for the accident, the city may be held responsible should Lauren’s family file a wrongful death lawsuit. However, premises liability could also play a key role if it is found that the swim club did not keep the premises safe.

Being electrocuted while swimming is more common than most people think, and as such, swimmers need to be aware of the danger. Two young children were electrocuted while swimming in a lake in Missouri. Police suspect the electrocution is due to the lights and pump supplying water to a slide for children on the dock. In Tennessee, two boys were shocked in the water while swimming by houseboats, supposedly by faulty wiring from one of the houseboats.

These tragic stories serve as a reminder to make sure that all equipment and wiring near water is safe.
