The journal Pediatrics has produced a new study that shows a child is injured by a TV every 30 minutes. With some cases resulting in death, the study provides eye-opening facts.
With more than 17,000 injuries from falling TV’s serious enough to require medical treatment, parents need to be aware of the problem and know what they can do to prevent an accident in their own home. More than 60% of the accidents involve a child under age five. The most common injury is a concussion, but neck and leg injuries are prevalent as well.
The cause of these accident points back to the rising popularity of flat screen TV’s that tip easily due to being top-heavy. Another contributing factor is the placement of TV’s. Having a TV on a dresser, bureaus or armoires makes it easy for the child to either reach or climb to the TV.
Prevention
Solutions to prevent further accidents are often simple and cheap. Safety anchors and anti-tip devices can secure your TV from potentially falling on someone. Parents are asked to not place items that children may be reaching for on top of the TV, such as the remote.
Educating children on the safety hazards from a falling TV helps, as well as properly supervising your children.
