Flying debris from truck kills eight year old, mother loses arm

Posted on July 20th, 2012

Wednesday night, an Atlanta woman lost not only part of her arm, but lost her son as well due to engine parts flying off a semi trailer. Jameka French was traveling west bound with her son, Cameron Mcilwain, when a west bound semi truck had parts of its transmission fly off. The debris went across the median, and crashed through the windshield of French’s SUV.

French was hit in the arm by the debris first, and then it struck and killed her eight year old son. French was transported to a hospital where her arm was amputated below the elbow. French’s other child in the backseat was treated for minor injuries.

An investigation has been launched against the truck driver, David Washington, and any charges will be filed when the investigation is completed.

Trucking accidents have the highest passenger vehicle fatalities, but they also have a higher responsibility. Having a badly maintained truck or a driver using unsafe operation methods is dangerous to anyone on the road. It is also illegal. If it is proven that a truck driver was not adhering to trucking laws, they could pay serious penalties for their crime.

Unlike regular driver’s there are lots of additional rules that truck drivers have to follow in order to comply with the law. Often times trucking companies will not make sure their drivers follow these additional safety rules and it results in serious injury due to defective or dangerous equipment.
