A four-year-old girl from Hutchison is recovering from a dog attack that happened last Monday evening.
It happened in her uncle’s yard by a large Shepherd mix. Around 5:40 p.m., her uncle was alerted by her screaming and arrived to find Kailynn Renee Hartman pinned on the ground by the dog.
After seeing the dog had her by the neck, Hartman’s uncle was able to scare off the dog. Hartman was rushed to the hospital where she was treated for a large bite to the front of her neck and multiple teeth wounds to the back of her neck. Hartman is expected to recover.
The dog has been found and taken to a vet, but no collar or owner information has been found.
With dog attacks on the rise around the nation, Wichita families are reminded that a dog attack can happen anywhere and anytime. Keep these tips in mind if are a victim of a Kansas dog attack.
Yell “no” or “go home” – Most dogs have been taught these words by their owners and will most likely stop them in their tracks.
Put an object between you and the dog – A tree, bench, umbrella or any item you are carrying may deter the dog.
Never run – The dog will want to chase you. Instead, turn sideways and slowly remove yourself out of the dog’s territory.
Don’t stare at the dog’s eyes – The dog may take this as a sign of aggression.
