Manufactured by KidCo Inc., the Pea Pod Travel Crib has been available to consumers since 2005. However, after one baby’s death and nine more becoming entrapped or distressed, almost 220,000 infant travel beds have been recalled.
According to Consumer Product Safety Commission, a baby could suffocate from rolling between the bed’s air mattress and the tent’s fabric sides. This is what happened in December of 2011 to a five-month-old infant.
A kit has been produced by KidCo to prevent the hazardous pocket from forming. It has a thinner air mattress and supports that strengthen the sides of the tent. Consumer safety groups disagree with this choice and believe full refunds should be offered instead. Because the Pea Pod isn’t a crib, bassinette, or play yard, it isn’t tested for safety standards.
