Young boy hit by minivan on his way to school in north Wichita

Posted on September 12th, 2012

Shortly before 8 a.m. last Thursday morning, a seven year old Mueller Elementary student tried to cross the street. Unfortunately, he was hit by a minivan on 29th Street North.

According to Lt. Doug Nolte, the boy began to walk into traffic and cross the street, this prompted a sedan to slow down and the boy stepped back onto the curb. However, after the sedan passed, the boy darted back into the street, directly in front of a green minivan. The minivan slowed down, but again, the boy stepped back onto the curb.

Apparently, the slowing of the minivan made the boy think it was safe to cross. He stepped off the curb again and was hit by the minivan. He has been taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. His injuries were not life threatening. Because the minivan had been slowing down when impact happened, the boy’s injuries were much less extensive than they could have been.

Wichita drivers are reminded to slow down in school areas and be attentive to children on the sidewalk. Before the age of 9, children have a difficult time judging speed or distance of approaching cars. It’s important that children be educated on the safety rules of crossing the street.
